The English 189A Tapes Creating a Popular Culture: 3 Historical Case Studies 9/11/90
The 3 Historical Case Studies were The English Revolution, The Industrial Revolution in England And the US, and The Rise of Youth Culture after WWII. Basing my course on one John Brewer taught at Harvard, I not only had a huge reader covering everything from Jello Biafra's run for mayor of San Francisco to Mario Savio's FSM Greek Theater speech to Dwight McDonald's famous New Yorker profile of Eugene Gilbert, "A CASTE, A CULTURE, A MARKET" to Marx and Engels' Conditions of the Working-Class in England to Mayhew's London labour and the London poor to Ranter and Muggletonian pamphlets and broadsheets. This mutlimedia course had the listening component highlighted below and a film series including Cromwell, Matewan, Blackboard Jungle, If . . ., Berkeley in the 60s, The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, The Decline of Western Civilization, and Valley Girl.
