I've got a few projects upcoming for Perfect Sound Forever. Next issue (June/July 2009) a full transcript of my 1992 interview with Kevin Shields ('We use volume as an instrument a lot live'). I'm currently transcribing a 50 minute interview with Robert Ellis Orrall from 1984 back when he was a Top 40 artist duetting with Carlene Carter on "I Couldn't Say No" but before he became Al Gore's best Brentwood buddy. Then it's on to unpacking the myths surrounding Sonny Boy Williamson II AKA Aleck Rice Miller through conversations with his living relatives. Finally I'm working on a bigger piece: An appreciation of Dust-to-digital, Luddites, and generally old stuff. We'll also discuss the label's future plans. Stay tuned.

Black tornado/that's what love is all about.

This week's BSB demonstrates its bifurcated nature with a dual title. Looking back both to the revelry of Mardi Gras but also the coming of Lent yesterday on Ash Wednesday and forward for the next month but also next week's pagan-cum-Christian-cum floral greeting card commercial on the 14th. We also wish to remember all the victims of the tornadoes of 2008 which appeared on the cusp of a cold front hitting hot air just as Mardi Gras revelry was turning to Ashy piousness, ironically.

February was traditionally a month devoted to Fertility rituals including the Roman Lupercalia celebrated from the 13th through the 15th of the month. Then 2 or 3 Roman martyrs named Valentine were linked to the month and the 14th specifically as it became St. Valentine's Day. The first direct linking between Valentine's Day and romantic love appears in Geoffrey Chaucer's
Parlement of Foules (1382):

"Ye knowe wel how, Seynt Valentynes day,
By my staut and thorgh my governaunce,
Ye come for to chese—and fle youre wey—

Aberdeen mississippi blues.

The 12/02/07 episode of BSB has a special theme, NE Mississippi blues from the Hill Country and the Black Prairie, spanning the area that runs southeast from Memphis to Tupelo along the Route 78 corridor and then more or less due south from Tupelo to Meridian along the Highways 45 corridors. I feature only homegrown local talent on this show, some famous some hardly heard before. The one exception is the final cut ("Return to Memphis") a welcome blues rejoinder by those famous "Union Men" out of Arkansas, The Cate Brothers.

I decided against trying to do a Thanksgiving-based blues show. I found a few tracks, but wasn't that fond of them musically. In 3 show's time (on December 16th) I will have a fantastic 2.5 hours of Chrismas- and New Year's-based blues. So this show is a higgledy piggledy collection of stuff I pulled out of my iTunes library, with somewhat of a focus on crossover blues rock and country blues from the Southeast esepcially during formative years in the 1970s. Two of my Freshmen classmates formed a band "Speedy & The Castanets." One of them, Damon Krukowski inherited a hand me down drum kit from his roommate Conan O'Brien. After college in 1985 they joined a former Dalton School friend and 1986 Harvard grad to woodshed and get signed by Rough Trade, becoming the great American indie band of the early 1990s almost know one in America heard. Dean Wareham went on to greater fame fronting LUNA.

This was his biggest hit, almost cracking the Top 50 and a mainstay of college rock. It typifies his sophisticated discussion of the difficulties and paranoia of post-modern love affairs.

Love is a Mix Tape

Rummaging through the closet while reorganizing stuff in my "Music Room", I found a mysterious box. When I looked inside it was the mother lode: a historical collection of mix tapes dating back to the mid 1980s at least. I'll blog about some of them (mine and gifst) next week when I have time, but for now a preview of the famous 5/23/91 tape Slow Grooves on Maxell XLS-II C-100 tape.



Here's the Cassette tape insert. It was created using a tweaked out version of my college classmate Dan Winkler's HyperCard program Cassette Labeller. A grad school friend, Jeff Erickson, helped me make the cut outs actually size properly to fit in the typical cassette box.

Love, peace, and happiness.

This week's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" is a Janus-faced radio show, looking back to some classic blues tracks and forward towards our musical future, having been inspired by Sasah Frere-Jones thoughtful New Yorker essay and podcast about race and music. This piece more than atones for his small part of the Stephen Merritt EMP Conference kerfluffle a few years back. I am an optimist and yes live in Southern exurbia; he is a more pessimistic Urbanite. Funnily enough I disagree with almost nothing he says about the acts he discusses, especially the gorgeously definitive diss of the Decembrists and their pompous frontman Colin Meloy. But I still think there's a lot of crossmixing of "colors" in modern indie rock. Here's the Playlist:

Three themes on tonight's show. After 2 weeks in London I brought back The Pig's Big 78s cd compilation. The Pig AKA Sheila Ravenscroft is the wife of the late BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel. Leading up to the Millenium she started presenting a featured 78 from John's mammoth collection each show. I've picked a few choice ones to air tonight. Also we're featuring artists who will be appearing next Friday at the Howlin Wolf Memorial Blues Festival in West Point, MS. Finally I even fit in a few new blues discs.
